£1k for a dedicated CD tuner or are you after a screen with DVD player as well?
If it's a single DIN CD tuner you're after, you're into top of the range stuff  .
My favourites:
McIntosh MX-406

Or you can opt for the Nakamichi CD-700

Denon DCT-1

Alpines are more in yer face but you can't argue with the sound quality of their CDA-7990 F#1 status headunit (but not as beautifully made as the above)

If you're going to spend that much money on a headunit, you have to make sure the rest of your sound system is at least on-par with the quality of the headunit.
Why not just get an all in one unit (although I'm not sure if you can get a reasonable in-dash unit for £1k new). Alternatively, spend the £1k on a full sound system overhaul. I would think that would be money better spent.

Have a word with Andy. He mated an aftermarket system onto stock sound system on an M3 vert yesterday. I would think £1k is reasonable amount of money to play around with a starter sound system.
Picture of my old Pioneer AVIC
and here is a pic of my new headunit

Mud, that's a sweet install. What's the head unit? Like it coz it doesn't block the air vents and as you know, it gets very hot
here in Scotland!
BTW, what's the snazzy blue neon for?

It's the Clifford Alarm LED.

Ok, somewhat disappointed, but great head unit though!
