Hi

I have a standard BMW Business RDS headunit in my 51 318ci. Its the tape player with a 6 disc changer.

I want to get an Infinity Basslink and connect it up. Ive done a search and read that BigFas and MysticM3 have done this - but no details on how the connectivity was achieved.....

Any advise please?

Cheers

Jamie

Hi Jamie

I did try and post to your question on my thread. This site and my firm do not work together

I think the bass link only accept RCA (phono) input which the BMW head unit does not provide. Therefore you would need a converter between the h/u and bass link. I'm not 100% sure on this though.

I hope to get my car done on 19th March. I can let you know for sure then. Or otherwise Teddy or Bigfas should be able to help.

Teddy, did you remove the ski hatch?

Durgesh installed mine and I didn't pay too much attention when he did it, however, I recently had it taken out and the connections seemed simple enough. First and most obvious is, get it some power, obviously from the battery in the boot.

Second, splice into your rear speakers. Do you have HK? If so, you can splice into the wires going into your 6x9's and feed them directly into the Basslink. If not, you'll have to get access to the speakers behind the rear door cards and do the same.

That's pretty much it

Peppernick installed his the other day. He'll be along to advise as well, I'm sure

Cool - just what im after since it doesnt need a separate amp.

So, when u splice into the rear speakers - can u not use them anymore? No HK in mine and aint looked that much in detail at the rear door cards for speakers, thought I just had the 6 speaker setup, 2 on rear shelf, 2 in front doors at the bottom and 2 in front doors at the top near door handle

Yeah i have the bass link in my other car... It will accept high inputs, you may have a amp located behid the boot changer carpet which will allow you to splice into the rear speaker cables....

Try this link it tells you what cables to splice into etc...

You can absolutely still use the existing speakers. Splicing just means connecting into them, not chopping the wires completely and redirecting the input.

I have the HK, I was running all 13 speakers, plus the Basslink all from the standard headunit

The Basslink accepts BOTH RCA and speaker level signal input. When using the speaker lever input, you do not need to use a separate trigger wire (just flick the power switch to AUTO and the basslink will turn on automatically once it senses power in the speak lines), but you have to when using RCAs.

I have the stock BMW stereo in my M3, but the system does have a puny amp under the CD changer (on coupes). Factory BMW headunits/Nav do not have RCA outputs. Unless you convert them, it's easier to just use the speaker level connection.

I spliced the rear speaker wires for signal for the Basslink. Route the wires from the rear top shelf behind the carpet so they are out of sight. The all you need to do is to link a power cable from the positive terminal of your battery to the batt terminal on your Basslink. The ground wire can basically go anywhere on the car with bare metal. I squeezed the wire between the battery clamp and the battery itself (the metal clamp is transfixed onto the chassis). Then just route the remote gain into the cabin. You're done [cool

What a difference it makes too ;) Don't need to use ski hatch, bass is good enough (for me) in a sealed boot.

How much better did it sound Fas, compared to stock HK ?

BigFas

MUCH better than stock. There was a noticeable difference.

But now I've gone for a "proper" install, it's a night and day change

Nick - where did u locate the basslink unit in your boot? I want to maintain as much space as possible and be able to get to the spare and fold down the seats if needed without having to rip anything out....

cheers

I hardly use my boot, so space is not an issue. I have a rear strut running right across the entire boot, so the only place to mount my Basslink is right at the centre.

I'll take some pics later.
