View Full Version : Give me a brake, cus I'm so h'AP'py..
Well, after all the modding I have done over the years the one mod I have never achieved until now is proper brakes.
I have upgraded the brakes on a few of my cars and always gone with bigger OE model brakes (eg. 330 brakes on my last 328, etc).
But now I am joining the big boys... :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
Picked these bad boys up (only covered 1000 miles from new) and will be fitting them next week...

I am just so happy. And as I am into quite stealthy mods, I was pleased to find that they were black calipers with the yellow lettering.

What an excellent Mod! the 330d is going from strength to strength!
That is going to be some hefty stopping power!
Congrats bro [cool
Cheers for the replies peeps. They are massive calipers. The discs are only 5mm bigger in diameter so they will fit nicely behind my CHs. They are direct bolt on and the kit even comes with new backing plates to fit the bigger components.
As for going to the Ring in August Matt, I would love to but I just know it ain't happening this year. But I have told her that from next year I will be going yearly with EvoT if it happens in August'ish time each year

looking good mate-you will be amazes at the difference over stock!!! great mod
The only thing I was wondering was will the standard master cylinder be up to the job of these new brakes? I know a lot of guys have upgraded to 4/6 pot calipers so I don't believe there should be an issue, but just checking really.
nice one raj. Is that the first saloon on here with a BBK ? Nice.
Nice mod!!! would love to have bbk's but somehow dont think i need them with a 318 lol

Shouldn't have a problem. Plenty have upgraded to Brembo, StopTech and AP on a non-M without any issues. When I had the APs on my 330 CS, I was unlucky. Somehow the master cylinder and the 4-pot calipers just would not work together for some reason and the conversion was ditched before we had a chance to sort out the problem.

When it comes to modding, 'need' is insignificant compared to the reasoning of 'want', even if sometimes there isn't a good reason to justify your action ;)

Only depends if you are talking about E46 saloons otherwise no as Tin's M5 has Brembo's. Hopefully it may be the first '46 saloon with 'em on here :D .

In what way did they not work together? Was it that the master cylinder couldn't provide enough pressure to work the brakes properly?

Cool mod Raj - I have the rear upgrade caliper kit but am still trying to source a front kit. Were these on eBay? I've read that a lot of people experience noise but they say it is sorted with an anti-squeal greese of some kind.
Cheers,
Raj

Raj, somehow the pistons weren't retraction fully once the brake fluid heated up, causing excessive squealing and binding even when the pedal wasn't depressed. We tried different fluid, rebuilding the calipers but nothing worked.
Brake noise is very much dependent on the type of pads used. Some pads squeel more than others. I tend to stick to performance road pads, they are easy on the discs and work well even on track days (unless you're ultra hardcore and do plenty of runs per session, but for me I kind of like to go out on the track for 2-3 rounds (just one run at the Ring) and then come back to chill before going out again).

Ah ok. So there at least wasn't a problem with the match between the brakes and the rest of the system.
Once fitted I will have to see how they go with the old squeal. I will use plenty of grease etc so hopefully there won't be a problem.
One thing i would like to know though, is about the pads that are used. This is my first experiance with a BBK so a little unsure. With normal applications you can get a load of different pads made for your car that fit the OE calipers, however with a BBK what are the options for pads? Can you still get a number of different named manufactured pads for the AP calipers and where could I possibly source them? I guess I was under the impression I would have to always get the pads that came with the kit from an authorised AP dealer.

The kit was in the classifieds of last months PBMW. Just phoned up the guy and agreed a price (well cheap I can tell ya ;) ).

Raj you may need to check the pad database to see which make do pads for your APs. They are shaped differently to suit different caliper design. AFAIK, you should have a problem sourcing Pagid pads. I use Axxis pads for my StopTech because they as readily available for the StopTech ST40 calipers. Call AP and ask them which pad they recommend for road use.
Check out http://www.apracing.com/car/brakepad/index.htm
Cheers for the advice as usual Nick. Will check the site out or phone them direct. Will only need to source new pads if these ones squeal. The kit has only covered about 1000 miles so there is virtualy no wear on them.

BBK pads and discs last a lot longer than standard. From my experience, even with light track use, front pads will easily last 20K and rear pads god knows how long. Front discs easily 50-60k and rear discs might outlast the car!
Now that is good news Nick. Guess I may as well sell me 330 brakes then... :D
