Well, the M3 was looking like it needed some colour coding so luckily, my dad has a 318ci and a few years ago, when I sold my 318ci which I had fitted 6 pot grills to, I swapped them into his 318 and I kept his 4 pot ones. Remembering I had them stashed away I ordered a couple of cans of phoenix yellow and set to work painting the outer edges and the fog surrounds, same as what I did on the 330i. They turned out superb IMHO. Really suits the car and I love the look now. First pic is obviously pre paint ;)

Did you get the spray from the dealer?
Any prep work involved?

Im considering doing this ...

Thanks

Jamie

You will be fine as long as you are patient. The very worst thing to do when using rattle cans is to rush things. Nice light even coats of primer then your colour and laquer. Preparation is the key, take your time prepping and it will come good. The one thing with laquer is that its drying time is a bit longer than the paint. I was waiting 1 hour in between laquer coats as opposed to around 40 mins in between the actual paint coats and around 25 mins in between primer coats. I reckon I must have laid down 6 coats of primer, probably 6-7 of colour and four of laquer, finished the last laquer coat at 11:30 last night. Just make sure that where you are painting is good for leaving them to dry or they are on something that can be moved without touching or rocking the pieces. With the laquer just do very light coats otherwise I guarantee it WILL run, I have experianced this too many times when being impatient for a quick finish so now I just take my time. Good luck, looking forward to some pics :D

Yep, dealer supplied paint as I am not confident that halfrauds could colour match PY well. Cost around £22 for two packs which include both the paint and laquer. I used both packs on this little amount as there really is not much paint in them :( . I split the grills so that no masking was required and rubbed the pieces down thoroughly to get a good key for the primer to stick. Rest is as above ;)

Nice one Paul, great DIY effort. [cool

Do you need to rub down between coats (of paint or laquer)?

How did you prep the surface before applying the original primer? You mentioned rubbing it down - what did you use?

I like the kidneys but not too sure on the foglight surrounds as it highlights the square bracket which looks a bit odd to me.

Good stuff though.

Not sure on the fog light surrounds Paul. Don't get me wrong, they look like a proper nice finish, but just not sure if I don't prefer them blacked out. Personal taste I guess - and we all know mine is black-orientated. :) The grille looks top dollar though, that's a nice job, with that much lacquer it should last well too.

I can understand the fog cover comments, for some it may look too much, in the metal/plastic it does look alright, however, I have got a brand new pair of OEM black covers just in case ;)

very nice! that looks like a really good job and it looks great-not sure about the fogs though. ive thought about doing this a few times but do actually like the chrome, but seeing these pics could have changed my mind lol.

ive used py oem paint and had it mixed at halfords and the halfords paint was just as close a match as the oem.

i sprayed my old hamann foglight covers with the oem paint, but a few words of caution- paint from a spray can is not as tough as factory paint. i left my foglight covers off the car for over 2 weeks and the first time i drove it they were stonechipped to fcuk! as the m3 front seems to attract stones and they should be driven hard, i think they will chip very quickly. keep us posted!

now where did i put my spray cans.....

Same happened on the last car Matt. I have noticed that halfrauds sell clear 'enamel' spray. I may well buy this tomorrow and use it on a test set of fog covers and see if it is any good. Hopefully one or two coats might help protect against the stone chipping. The finish is so nice I don't want to drive it because of this issue :( . I'll let you know if it is any good. Am gonna take out the grills and covers after the football until I have tried the enamel spray ;) . Thanks for the warning [ok

been there, tried it- it doesnt provide any extra protection from stones, i dont think anything does!

Pants, ah well, you have saved me £7. Just have to keep spraying them every 8 weeks or so :( . Will be interesting to see how shagged they are after a couple of weeks :p . If I take the car to brunty I will be taking the grills and covers off and taping up the bumper and bonnet :p

Paul, did you contact Roy regarding his Kiwi fruit? :D

mods i think he should be banned ;).

I kind of liked the way the chrome went with the PY. The colour coding looks awesome but i think it would have looked cooler with chrome slats ;). Definately still an improvement over stock. Thats tooo much chrome. Also nice one on the fog surrounds [ok.
