View Full Version : 10mm spacers all round - advantages?
Was chatting to another M3 owner (alpina527 - Nice M3 mate, luv the intake!!) who has 10mm spacers fitted all round, apart from looking abit meatier, are there any other advantages of having these spacers? are they difficult to fit? (longer nuts) and how much am I looking at to do this?
Cheers guys

I believe a Fireman has done the same to his E39. The benefits are a wider track which gives less role and better cornering. It also brings the alloys 'out of the dark' so to speak so usually improves the look.
Down side is that the wider track will mean changes to the suspension geometry, which could cause premature tyre wear and extra stress on sussy components.
In addition, unless a hubcentric spacer is used it intrduces a further week point in the set-up by placing the whole weight of the car on the bolts and not shared with the hub.

10mm is quite a space, less stress on a 5mm which i'm running on the fronts due to my BBK.
Roy will be able to sort you out with longer wheel nuts (and spacers i think)

i got 10mm Rouge Engineering hubcentric spacers on all 4 corners. these came with longer lugs also. i put them on the fronts to clear my 380mm Brembo GT brakes. but for the rears, just put them on for a wider stance. i dont feel any negative adverse effects from putting on these spacers. if anything, the steering feels more sensative.
i got mine from here Zechhausen (http://www.zeckhausen.com/BMW/E46_M3.htm) [hiya

Matt - where did you get your 5mm spacers - looked everywhere for hubcentric 5mm - in the end Roy sourced me some 10mm Eibach hubcentric spacers with extended wheel bolts (also to allow clearance on BBK)
J2D, As said elsewhere - definitely go for hubcentric.

You can't get hubcentric 5mm spacers. There are no rubbing issues with 10mm all round on 19s and Eibachs.

no rubbing with 10mm on the rears (275/30/39). i tried 12mm before and got some rubbing with passengers in the rear seats.

I am running 5mm H&R non-hubcentric spacers at the rear (the lip on the original hub sticks out enough to catch the wheel, so no need for hub-centric spacers if you stick to 5mm thickness). BBS LMs ET37 (with the spacer, offset drops to ET32) with Goodyear F1 275/30/19. Rubbing only on fast corners (mostly trackdays) with rear paseengers. Otherwise, no problems at all.
This may sound stupid, but what is a hubcentric spacer?

Had no issues with negative reports, and they look real nice..

A hubcentric spacer is an aluminium spacer that has a bore on one side that sits on the original spigot. The other side has the same size spigot machined onto it to accept the wheel, thus giving a good central location.
The original spigot is 11mm long, so by allowing for the 15 degree x 5mm taper in a stock wheel, the spacer can be made to an absolute minimum thickness of 10mm.
As Nick says, his 5mm spacers are basically just a ring which leaves 6mm of the original spigot protruding. This is just enough to locate a wheel on. This assumes that the 15 degree taper is no longer than 5mm ie, 1mm location.
The bolts are also very important. Don't buy the 'Mickey Mouse' bolts from the local accessory shop. Have a word with Roy. I'm sure he can source some good quality bolts.
Here is a pic of my custom made EN24 bolts that have been heat treated to 'V' condition, then zinc plated and passivated. They are way over the top, but I like to make sure

What inch spacers would you guys recommend to fill the arches running OEM CSL Wheels?
Thanks,

I have Rogue Engineering 18mm spacers on the front and 10mm spacers on the rear. 18mm required for the BBK and the 10mm to even things up. Fully lowered on PSS9's and no rubbing at all. 235/265 tyre set up.

I thought 15mm at the front and 10 rears where the best??

i will be getting some spacers with my new wheels to beef up the look!
I heard about issues about the spacer getting stuck to the hub after times? would the best advice be sumthing like copper slip when putting spacer on?
Do Eibach do 10mm spacers? Everywhere I have seen they only seem to have 5mm and 12mm.

eibach I think DO do 10mm spacers, Roy sells them. If not, H&R definitely do as I have a set on mine to clear the BBK.
Ah ok I want to get the 10mm Eibach pro spacers all around on mine, will check out H&R info
