Whassup dudes and the ever growing number of dudettes!!

Right.....

My Cuz has a 330i....lives in saudi arabia, bought it from dubai 6 months ago....has had a full BMW service history (those of you who know about the gulf region , will know that the standards in the UAE, when it comes to cars are much higher than that of saudi)

anyway....he's been changing the oil every 5000km, which is a habit for him as he has owned sh1theap american oil guzzlin cars before....he's been using castrol SLX

he recently took his 330 to a local 'bmw approved' workshop, they looked under his oil cap and found some kind of 'cooked' oil flakes under the rocker cover and on the oil cap.....

now they say that the car needs a 'bmw approved' engine flush, which will take 3 days...and cost a bomb..apparently the engine will be cleaned and washed (sounds like bollox to me)...and they believe that this was caused by a oil change using the wrong grade of oil....which my cousin confirms he did do, using mobil 1 semi syth (does this exist)

Anyway imma cut da LONG TINGG!!

Is it possible to have 'cooked' or burnt oil flakes from using the wrong oil??

and will these 'flakes' cause a blockage in the engine channels etc etc.??

any advice would be appreciated!!! :D

Sounds more like very regular short journeys where the engine oil wasn't allowed enough time to thoroughly warm up.

It's not the make, it's the grade of oil that has to be specific. If it's 0W-40, be it Mobil, Castrol or Redline, they all are acceptable.

Thanks Nick.....

I thought as much regarding the brand of oil.....but that aforementioned 'dodgy' oil change was with semi-synth oil......and it sounds anal i know but is it essential for the oil to be fully synth? As all my expert mechanics reckon you should never put a part or fully mineral oil into a BMW....

Also , what you guys reckon of 0w-30, as this is what has been in my car from day dot!

Apparently as it's really hot over there....the oil 'cooks' quicker!

@ Adood...He's in Yanbu...Yanbu Al-Bahar...but has had his oil changes done previously in Jiddah
