View Full Version : Disapointment BHP down!!!

After spending what i consider alot of money on eisenmann exhaust and Gruppe M replica i found that my performance went from 219BHP and 212 Ib ft to 195BHP (thats 3 bhp less than stock) and 211 Ib ft also a big drop in tork peeking at 211 (5300 rpm) at 70 mph and droping to 177 (4400 rpm) at 80mph
Whats going on HELP :o :(
Did you measure it on a dyno?
Lots of things effect dyno figures, heat is a big cause in dropped figures, did you get both runs done on the same dyno?

Same dyno cooler day wasnt hot at all when tested this time time before was baking, still a big drop 24 BHP

Can you feel the a major drop in performance though? You would notice 24bhp big time when driving round.

had mine rolling roaded on sat (at a peugeot meet,lol).. was 333bhp :(:(

i would say yes there is a loss but its compensated by the sound if you get what i mean i sounds faster, the bloke said have the fuel filter changed and get a power boast valve, he seamed to think it felt as if it wasnt getting enough fuel
sound right??

The ecu would adjust the AF ratio with small mods such as the exhaust and airfilter, so it shouldnt be runing lean or rich.
TBH i dont think the Eienmann will give any gain at all if its the quad ( cant remember which one you had) and any gains from the filter would be minimum.
I wouldnt worry about it too much, how many runs did you do?

I have the dual eisenmann race and sound pipe, you propably right not to worry about it i should pay to have it done on a pro. dyno, this was done by Sid's Tune Shop a mobile dyno at a car show probrably not accurite at all

Think you hit the nail on the head, it's the quality of the dyno.
Good dyno's are installed with maintained enviornments, the important issues are the relative humidity (RH) temperature and barometric pressure.
The enviromental design should be 20degs C @ 50% RH, proffessional race teams have dyno's with variable enviroments so that they can set their cars up to perform in different climates around the world.
So I think that you have answered you own question, don't take too much notice of the figures you were given, it's the quality of the Dyno
If it's really bothering you, try TDI-PLC they have a Dyno, they are in Romford, You will know when you have been to a good company, because they should check your oil, water and tyre pressures( and adjust them ) or at least ask you I you have checked them and confirm that they are all correct, good Dyno plots with show figure for RH, Temperature and BP.
As Lee suggested , I think you are expecting to much from induction change, exhaust will reduce some resistance ( back pressure ) so should give you some extra Bhp, but not loads.

Yep, like what has been said, unless you compare on the same dyno in the same environment, you can't put too much weight on the dyno readings. Also, the fan cooler is very important, especially with intercooled cars.

Thanks for all the info, i wont waste my money next time, although its pretty cool to see different cars on a dyno at car show
I have a guy near me not sure of his name but Sumo Power take there Skyline there for tests so would have thought hes pretty good since he has the quickest skyline in UK
What sort of price do they normaly charge for dyno run?
this guy charges £80hr is that about right?
£80/hour doesn't sound too bad. I think AmD charge around £100ish for a dyno run. The better quality ones do tend to charge a little more. But as the saying goes, you get what you pay for (generaly, anyway :D ).

Hourly charges are normally associated with with tuning work on a Dyno, if your just going for a power run you should get fixed charge which is mormally £50.00 - £75.00, these are normally week day charges south of the Watford Gap.
The best crack is to go on a shoot-out day, as you can get someone to open on a Sunday because of volume of customers and if theres lots of same make cars it's a good laugh.

Sorry mate, I posted before reading yours, yep Amd want £100.00.
G-Force Motorsport charge £ 65.00
Ian the sponsors must have some contacts to help you out with prices,
any interest in a "Shoot - Out " day [hmm G-Force may be interested for a Saturday or Sunday.

all things being equal then no way should you be experiencing a REAL WORLD power loss after fitting the exhaust and intake , it wont be much but I would expect say 5 - 8 bhp total , but as I always say BHP is an almost usless figure in the real world , torque and responce are what count .
Forget power boost valves , no need on a car like a BMW .
I am willing to bet if you got AMD to dyno and remap the car you will feel a positive performance increase .
Also buy your self a £140 ish G meter , they are bloody accurate and 0 - 60 or 0 -100 times are one of the best yardsticks to assses upgrades without prohibative costs of dyno sessions ( not to mention the wear a dyno puts on the car ) . Always use same piece of road , in same weather ( as far as possible ) , and always use the average of two runs , in opposite directions .
best of luck

What's a "G" meter (steady) , how does it work.

Hi bob where are G-Force located?
And do they do remaps there if you want?

Lol ...
Hi bob
G meter is a clever little accelerometer box that attaches to the cars windscreen and allows to accurately measure 0 -60 , 1/4 mile , and G force around a bend .
well worth it
Let me know if anything else

G-Force are in Alyesbury, don't think they do remaps for BMW, but i'll ask.
You have a choice ; DMS, AmD or TDI-PLC all three have web sites, and there are probaly many more that I don't know about.
I know that AmD will cost you £ 550.00 which includes dyno time with before and after plots, but many of the fellas on here have used companies and indivduals that are a lot cheaper, so perhaps someone will suggest an alternative, I think you can get it as low as £200.00 ? but I don't know if any who's had it done has had the improvement confirmed on a dyno, dyno's will also show torque increases.
TDI-PLC have been around for ages and i've not been to their site for a few years, so might be worth you having a look.
Cheers

So has anyone got one of these, I've found a few on the net and they go upto £ 300.00

Thanks bob for all the info.
The guy i was talking about near me that does dyno runs for Sumo Power, i went to see him again he said its £65 for dyno run in controled eviroment state of the art dyno and if i under stood him right its not just one run does several untill you get three matching results and keeps all your info of previous runs on the computer so if and when you come back you can check it against previous results all stored by your number plate
Also if anyones interested if we can get 10-15 cars he will knock it down to £40 on a sat or sunday, maybe i should put something in the meet section see if get any interest what do you think
He doesnt do remaps though :(

No problemo matey.
I didn't realise it was so cheap at some of the places further south. Maybe we should organise an EvoT RR day!

Just saw this post after mine. Sounds like a good idea. Put it up in the meet section to gauge interest. I'd be up for it.
