Is the plate actually registered to your car? If so, then according to the dvla the plate is actually yours, so you'll be able to just transfer the plate. If it's on a retention certificate in your mum's name, then she'll just have to put you down as a nominee, costs about £25 I think. Check the dvla website, it's all on there.

as long as your mom (current owner) signs for it, it can be transferred to any car. i did this to my wife's car. Had to pop into the dvla office in person tho

DVLA swansea is the head office. Your local one will be Maidstone.

The car dont need to be in your name get the plate taken off costs 130 to put it on retention and when you do the form you need to fill in, on that the owner of the plate will be your mum but you can be the nominee.

Therefore you have right to register the plate onto your car.

Ok we have just done this for the new project :) .Download this form
http://www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/forms/v317.pdf fill in the details then go to your local Dvla office hand in the V5 for your old car V5 for your new car,Mot's for both and certificate of insurance to cover new car.The fee is £80,they will then give you a receipt and new docs etc come through in about 10 days.Remember to change insurance when you change the plates :) .Make sure that you dont sell your present car with the plate as it can lead to problems later on.If you want, use the same form now to put the plate on retention and just do the transfer later its the same fee anyway :)

to transfer straight onto a car the car will have to be in the name fo her mum she has to become a nominee in order to put the plate onto a car that she owns.

If you put it on retention rather than a transfer the fee goes up to £105.
