Z4's?

My cousins owns a Z4 not sure what year. Hes got a broken rear drivers side spring and obviously wants to replace both the rear springs. Now hes been getting qoutes of £260-£300 from specialist to supply and fit with OEM springs.

He's been told that there are up to 10 different springs depending on the weight of the car with all the extras fitted. He's also been told that the gas in the struts needs calibrating after they have installed the new springs. Something to do with the stability of the car when the "split diff" kicks in.

Now I always thought it was a simple case of jack up car undo strut bolt take out old spring install new spring then let the springs bed in for a few hundred miles then get the wheel alignment done to be on the safe side. I have never heard of the gus struts needing calibrating.

Can anyone advise if there is any truth in what the specialist is saying?. I dont want him to get ripped of and pay for "phantom" work...

Cheers lads :)

The same happened to me a couple of years ago. Bmw quoted something ridiculous for the spring and labour, around £200. They didn't say what work would be involved. Anyway, I ended up buying the spring for £60 I think from them and fitted it myself.

Have a word with jazzman (patrick), he helped me with me when I replaced my springs, both times.

Since then I've lowered the car on eibachs and had no problems whatsoever. Car is 316i 2004 saloon btw.

Sounds to me like the perfect excuse to mod the car.... go ahead change the springs, drop the car a little and enjoy the handling improvement

I did inform him about the handling improvment with regards to Eibach's etc but I think he is happy with the ride height so will be sticking to OEM springs. I just wanted to know about this gas strut calibration issue as I have never heard this mentioned before. I put this question up on a few other boards and it does seem that the specialist he spoke to is feeding him a line

Moe thanks for those details I will be forwarding the link to this thread to my cousins ;)

Thanks for all the feedback chaps!...

I've never run into the shock calibration thing before sounds a little bit suspect, but I've never done anything on a Z4 so I can't say for sure :)

If the rear end is anything like the E46 all you need to do is take one bolt out at the bottom of the shock, move the suspension down (a second person applying pressure will do) pull out the old spring, put the new in and bolt it up again (use a jack to move it back into place - as you'll have the car on axle stands anyway).
