View Full Version : ICE -For the Bora
I recently fitted my Sony headunit to my girlfriends Tigra & has improved the quality of sound so much its made me a little jealous. I've seen alot of people have Alpine stereos fitted.
So a trawl of eBay has shown some reasonable priced items but i really can't afford to spend a lot, i want it to be a CD unit & with a iPod lead or at least accept an iPod lead.
Can anyone make any suggestions towards which model would be most suitable & if anyone has a clean working unit looking to sell please PM me.
Thanks
You know it makes sense....;) (http://forum.evotechnik.net/showthread.php?t=26942)
But what to get Raj is the question, unless your referring to your very nice Alpine unit, which is a bit more than i was thinking of getting!
Alipne CDE-9882Ri
Full speed iPod control for <160. You know it makes sence.

And please put the peanuts away I can't focus when you post :p
The apline's i found on ebay were more around the fifty pound mark, sadly coming up to Christmas and all its going to have to be cheap & second hand. But thanks for the advice mega.
And my thread has been soiled by peanuts :(

Be a bit careful about the Alpine units, they can be a little bright. Most of the Sony units are quite full and smooth sounding in comparison.
Have a look on http://www.talkaudio.co.uk/vbb/ in the classifieds, there are some great units up for sale used and they are generally a lot cheaper than ebay.
Utter deception from gIzzE and I'm not sure why?
Alpine head units are used at every level, and your probably the first person I've ever seen that would recommend anything from sony above anything from alpine.

What are you talking about, "Deception"??
Alpine are notorious for being lively sounding, which most describe as bright.
I didn't recommened anything from Sony, the soundsatge is crap, they loose detail and they look like shite too!
All I said was if he really liked the sound from the Sony that he put in his girfriends car he might not get on with the Alpine sound, it is completely different.
I have a 9987 with genesis amp, Rainbow profi speakers and an Aliente Sub in teh 530i and about to put a IVA-D310RB into the Merc estate, so I am not an anti Alpine person at all.
Although, I do have to say the £400 alpine in the 530i repalced a £125 used Nakamichi CD400 and doesn't even come close on sound in any respect. Just more features.
But the Nak had an aux input and volume, so did everything, if a little basic in comparison.
I would also look at Pioneer and Clarion as well mate, plus Kenwood and JVC have been making some good units recently.
I was only describing my old Sony in comparision to the standard Vauxhall stereo. Unfortunatly i dont spend that much time in my car now so i cant justify to myself spending loads on it.
Saying that i dont want a halfords or Aldi cheapy, id rather a quality second hand unit.
Nakamichi is not on any kind of comparative ground with Alpine. Even Alpine F1 Status falls far short of the sound out of almost any Nakamichi head unit - which is why they are still used in so many SQ competitions :)
Personally I run a Phoenix Gold setup at the moment from an Alpine Head unit. It is admittadly slightly bright to some peoples tastes. That said, not to mine. With the levels of bass I run, its nice to get the tweeter fighting over the top and sounds pretty spectacular on well-recorded music. This is just my setup though, not really relevant.
Glad your not trying to suggest the Sony is better than Alpine though. I was worried!!
NB. a linedriver/EQ setup and completely defeating any effects added by the HU makes this pretty irrelivent anyway.
BACK TO TOPIC though. The unit I suggested is the cheapest brand new unit to come with the full speed ipod link AND the necessary cables, in the box. You can go cheaper but often then need to buy a cable seperate which is another 20-30. If you can get one used from TA or fleabay then go for it buddy.
