Had a meeting in Rennes which is northern France, after looking at flight plans, realised it was a pain in the butt to get to, so decided to take an overnight ferry from Portsmouth to St Merlot. I've been faffing around looking at cars and I was speaking to a sales rep from Porsche chiswick. a couple of weeks ago, he offered me a weekend test drive, i had to decline as I was travelling, but on the off chance, called him and asked if it would be ok. As long as insurance was proven, was fine, so covernote in hand, Tuesday evening I picked up a 2008 911 C2S. As I'm not interested in a manual, the convertible was the only tiptronic they had.

What do I think? Love it. There's plenty of room inside. Headroom, legroom and luggage space in the front for quite a big suit-carrier, a computer bag and a bloody big north face coat.

the car has the new 3,8 engine and it just feels so so precise. I can only liken it to my BM being a bloody blunt knife and the 911 is a fresh scalpel.

The noise is sublime and the powerdelivery is just on tap from 1,200 revs through to 7,000. Engine is delimited from factory and I hit an indicated 175mph (on a private road) and it was just solid.

My biggest concern was how it felt over long distances. If I get one, it'll be a hardly-used toy, but i'd do 1-2 long distance road trips. After 2 hours, hips felt twisted and slightly ached. Dealer said it was because it had "sport seat". There's standard seats which he'll make sure are in the DSG (or whatever they've named it) sustem, so I'll try that too.

In short. I've found the car for me. Revised model 997 coming out next year with circa 100 changes ranging from minor to major, so worth waiting for that to come out and then pick up a cheaper current version or something.

Last pic on the boat back from Caen to Portsmouth

Fas - go to Porsche Hatfield, as they have the new 2009 C2S with the additional 30bhp for test drive (I mean the car is available to buy since July this year), and the new twin-clutch transmission (dubbed PDK). Its a very precise car (did the test), except that the price is extortionate - was £80k only after a few extras!!!

Definately go for it  . Having the engine in the rear does make so much difference to the handling, it's hard to explain until you've actaully driven a Porsche
