Well the time has arrived for the M to have it's inspection 1 trousers are round ankles in anticipation but before I go ahead just wanted to ask some questions.

What exactly does an Inspection 1 entail ? Are the valves clearances checked ?

What price should I be looking at from stealer and a reliable indy

Cheers

look in your service book that you should have with the car...tells you exactly what "should" be done on a insp 1.

As for prices..best to phone around, as different areas are probably different prices at indys...some are cheaper than others, some not but would have thought the at the stealer would be a set price throughout the country??

after you called around a bit...you will know what the average price is

so is that inspection 3? If you aren't bothered about dealer stamp i would take in to Maybank, they will do it for almost half that i reckon. I was there on Saturday when Amuro was getting his Inspection 2 done. Andy there is a top mechanic, looks after your car properly and knows his stuff.

I've heard Cooper reading is cheaper than most. Whatever you do don't take it to Cooper Croydon, they suck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It goes oil service, insp 1, oil service, insp 2 I think. I've PM'd Chaos but no reply as yet. Also heard bad things about coopers croydon so wouldn't go there. Cheers

37 minutes - gimme a chance!! :D You have PM now, but I'll post the prices openly, as per usual we don't hide anything that we do. :)

As you say, it alternates Inspection 1 and 2s between oil services. 67k is an Insp 1 as you rightly state, valve clearances are only done on Insp 2 services.

As I said, we'll post some pricing up for people in due course, been meaning to do it for ages, but basically no matter what the model of E46 or the service required our pricing won't exceed £500 all in.

Dan, are you sure valves are only done on insp2? In my service book it states they are checked at both inspections with the diff and gearbox oil being the additional job on the 2. I had some reshimming on an insp1 with the PY car.

Good price :) .

Nope. It's recommended for Insp1 and required for Insp2.

Realistically, they almost never need adjusting by the first Insp2 at 40k-ish, but after that it just depends on the individual engine and all the variables therewith. Can happily do it, of course, just adds time and a gasket kit to the cost. :)

Dan, valve clearances are checked and adjusted if necessary on any inspection services (E46 M3) according to BMW service schedules.

Cheers for the input mate. Will be done as a precaution anyway. Car booked in for next week. :)
