View Full Version : right hand drive performance manifolds for M50 and M52 engines

As I am sure you all know , the catalysts on E46 et al 6 cylinder engines are part of the manifold / headers .
WE are considering having these made as no one else seems to offer them , ( only LHD) and we estimate such a manifold set , with equal length headers , will potentially produce an additional 6 - 10 bhp on a standard engine .
Only worth doing if we can get some orders in , so were wanted to ask if any E46 owners outthere may be interested ?
We are calculating costs around the £ 1000 uk pounds .......is it worth it ?
please let us know your thoughts
thank s

Would the package for that price, include new sport/racing Cat's?
Or would we use the OEM ones?

hi durgesh
no, these are to be just de cat pipes , no cats at all , with tuned length pipes , both of which will give the extra performance .....

I thought you'd made some for the M52? What were the ones you showed me?

yes , we have made some for the M52 ...but now we are talking about making them for the M54 engines ...like yours is Lee

The price of the manifold is reasonable around the £800-1k mark especially if they are custom made. However, due to the way non-M E46s come from the factory with intergrated kats, doing the conversion means you'll automatically need to almost double the cost of the header conversion just for the racing kats. You can't do without either.
Unless you go full de-kat. But that would mean ECU adjustment and emissions problem that may not appeal to most other than the real hardcore modders.
So a £1600-£2000 conversion is a lot of money but if one can afford it, it's definitely a mod to do [ok

Hmmmmmm
Roy you labeled the thread M52 engines, thats what puzzled me. Needs changing to M54.
Gonna look into this one. On my last car it had 2 cats which it needed to pass the Euro emmisions. But i replaced both with straight through pipes. My dash then displayed an error code, but i got around this by soldering an O2 sim to my Sensor which sent a fake signal to the ECU, and everthing was fine. Even passed its first MOT emmisions test with no Kats.

Yup that's the way to do it! 02 Sims, however they don't work for everyone, safer option is to gett Racing Cats, know a guy on fanatics that can get good cats for $400 ($ Canada), which is very cheep. In which case this in combo with CA's manifold is a sick mod. Something that I would do, if I was not selling my car... ohh 380Bhp, and god only know the amount of torque.

sorry for the confusion Lee and all , as I have two similar threads going , one for M52 and one for M54 .
Our intention with the M54 manifolds is just to produce tuned length with no cats inside at all nor option for them , so will be fordie hard pertol heads really ....to do it anyother way will just cost too much .
the engine light will come on but active are working on a bypass wiring loom to try defeat thi s.
I am thinking there will be no specific need to adjust the ecu , although of course a remap will always help ....Nick any comments here ?

Yeah no Kats sounds cool. [jam
Tell more more when Active have this wiring loom as i really dont want to go the O2 sim way.
Better start saving again. :o

Dunno. I keep thinking CSL or ACS racing but i want something nobody else has :o
Any ideas, im really stuggling with this one.
Roy does anybody make roll cages for the E46? I cant find any

Anymore info on the AA wiring loom to get around the Kats Roy?
And would the custom made headers be able to bolt straight up to my Eisenmann pipes?

Lee. Schnitzer do a roll cage for the M3 - 5461 46300 is the part number. I can't see there being any issue fitting it into a Non M

Schnitzer roll cage is discontinued, i already tried. Plus i here it was arounf the 1k mark which is a ridiculous price.

Yeah i priced them up at Maxpower. For the leather seats its about £1800 or about £1200 for cloth , then a retrim on top. That includes for all adaptors/sliders etc.
Are we talking about these?

Actual picture is of a E36 header
If so I am under the impression that Super Sprint looked into RHD headers, but the gains were far too minimal and were out-weighed by the cost to manufacture the units.
But if you can prove sufficient gains at a reasonable cost, then I could possibly interested, but only possibly at this stage in time.

hi AJ
see how they all hi jacked my thread ...cheek :(
anyway , yes s sprint did look into this , but it was just the cost really that put them off , as they still offer a wide range of left hand drive manifolds for BMW .
These manifiolds will , I estimate , give aprox 5 bhp on a totally factory 328 e36 ;please note I have revised my initial expected power increase on page 1 of this thread downwards , I dont kno what I was thinking when I posted up 10 - 15 bhp
Where these really come in useful is on supercharged cars where flow is increased to allow for higher boost pressures
regards
Sorry I should really learn to read!! My information was purely based on the S54 E46 M3 engine.
I don't have a clue about any other engine, sorry, I'll go sit in the corner and be quiet :)

LOL
not at all , sorry just as much my fault ...after all you do have a big pic of an E46 as part of your sig
Basically , I am not 100% sure these WONT fit an M54 engine .....i just have not had time to try
will let you know

So will the E36 headers fit the E46???
CA Automotive UK
06-07-2005, 09:45 AM
THATS WHAT I WANT TO KNOW .... :D
I THINK THEY MIGHT
how bout i send you a set to try and fit Lee ?
lee330sport
06-07-2005, 09:53 AM
Yeah, after pod on the 17th im gonna take it off road for a while so you can send them then and ill have a go. If they dont fit we'll have to get some custom ones made up.
Any news on the wiring harness? Im not gonna run any Kats, as guys in the US arnt having any problems apart from CEL lights on the dash, i can cope with that.

ok first up is the M52 block
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/diagrams/v/34.png
Then M54
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/diagrams/c/531.png
The blocks dont look to different, the only thing that will determine if they fit or not is the steering column. Ill have a look at the job tonight. Im off next week so i could try them out for you?
lee330sport
06-07-2005, 01:34 PM
Theres also the fact that the M54 has 2 sensors where as the M52 only has one. But to me this looks do-able.:D
Just spoke to a tech at bmw and they use very simular gaskets too.

ok lee will get a set out to you .
no luck yet on the lambda defeat wiring I am afraid .
If comparing notes with guys in USA , remember their cats are built into the manifolds .....not sure if this affects anything or not

My Kats are in the manifold too, so should be the same.
Ill try and get it on the lift next week.Looks like the drivers engine mount has to come out, then i can sqeeze them in. Ill bolt them up and see what the fit looks like. If i can then mate them to the Eisenmann with some custom piping ill take them................at a discount of course for the R&D work:p
And providing it doesnt go into limp mode....hopefully not.

06-07-2005, 02:18 PM
no problem . Yes you are right about the cats of course , it was the M3 I was thinking of , where uk cars dont have the cats in the manifolds .
that all sound s fine Lee , I will get you a set out ......they may well not fit but fingers crossed .........
lee330sport
06-07-2005, 02:36 PM
Yeah, no harm in trying. If it fits though, its great news for the 330 owners.:D As the Kats can still be placed further down the line if needed.
