According to posters on the official site of the Gumball 3000 race, they've now shut down the forum and stopped answering questions about the Nick Morley and Matthew McConville hit-and-run accident we reported on earlier. One source told us over IM:
"everyone involveed has been told to shut up so im going around them, calling authorities...they tried covering the shit up, they've had 24 hours to issue a press release...and nothing of the sort...they kept it from all other gumballers too"

I would still do Gumball if i had the cash and it does interest me LOADS.
Its this years rally that seems to be a shite one, 1st issues up Germany now this. I dount it very much that a wealthy, educated person like them boys & girls would do a runner after such accident, after all they wouldnt of got far, they left their £100,000+ car behind and their plates.....
Yep Gumball forum is shut down.....

Juber, logic doesn't work like that (or, indeed, at all) in the heat of the moment, and rich people get used to buying their way out of trouble so the reality which would keep me and you at the scene of that accident may not do the same for those boys - but really nobody knows what the truth is at the moment. All anyone can do is assume, but from the reports there and the incredibly guilty and suspicious way that the organisers are behving, you'd have to assume that there's some truth at least to it. I wonder if they told the people they got a lift with what had happened. Hell, I wonder if they even realised, you'd have thought so but who knows? Let's not hang them just yet tho boys and girls, it's a horrible scenario but all we have right now is supposition and presumption.
Aside from that, it'll be interesting to see what happens to the rally now. I'm guessing it won't get away from this one scot-free and the various authorities who've been looking to make life hard/impossible for them will have a whole big crate full of worst-case-scenario to wave at them now...

Update:
Issued by Maximillion Cooper on behalf of The Gumball 3000 Rally - 21.30 / 03 May 2007
Following our earlier release reporting yesterday’s accident - As a sign of respect we have decided that this year's Gumball 3000 Rally will not travel any further and will end in Bratislava this evening, May 3rd 2007.
As the organisers of the rally we feel that it should be stopped as a mark of respect to Vladimir Cepulyoski who died today after an accident involving one the participating drivers.
We are very saddened by what has happened and feel that it would be wrong to continue. On behalf of Gumball 3000, we once again extend our deepest sympathies to his family and we are doing everything we can for them.
This is the first time anything like this has happened in 9 years of travelling through over 40 countries with 1000's of drivers and it is with deep regret that I make this announcement.

Maximillion Cooper, founder of the Rally says: "It is with extreme sadness I have to make an announcement of this nature in the events nine year history. The event is organised with each local authorities support and permission, and drivers are under strict stipulation to abide by the laws and road regulations of the country they are driving through. It is extremely sad for this unfortunate accident to have occurred. I am informed that the incident was reported immediately by the drivers. Both drivers are extremely traumatised by this occurrence.

I think it's more out of the fact that they allegedly did a runner from the scene (which wouldn't have been an accident if true) and the organisers can't really continue with the event given that doing so would show their support and encouragement for such behaviour. Like I said on the other thread though, we don't know the whole story yet, so we'll see what comes out.

The authorities are not tolerating such rallies much these days. Plenty were arrested on this trip across France, Belgium and Germany. Some are truely reckless, and IIRC Gumball has banned quite a few of these loose cannons. However, the long distance driving, and many a times, through the night, late night partying, in combination with raw adrenaline and supercars, it's a disaster waiting to happen. Some got off easy in the past, involving merely monetary loss and a few bruises, but this time it resulted in the demise of an innocent life, maybe 2. This may be the final straw to see the demise of such events.

Taken off GT Sprit..... A truely good speech
More then 24 hours after the deadly accident on Macedonian roads, Gumball 3000 finally announced the cancellation of this years rally. After the fatal accident on Macedonian roads yesterday afternoon Gumball 3000 tried to keep it quiet as much as possible, they kept the families of Marga and Vladimir, locals, fans, drivers and sponsors completely in the dark, it took massive negative publicity in the worldwide media for them to realise the coverup failed and there was nothing else left then to cancel the rally.
This totally ignorant behavior caused a lot of disbelieve and anger among the same families, locals, fans, drivers and sponsors resulting in a big anti-Gumball campaign. Sponsors took their websites down and removed all affiliation with Gumball 3000, locals expressed their anger in our comments and mailbox, fans discussed the events on virtually every forum and message board out there and drivers announced their immediate withdrawl. They had 9 years to prepare a scenario in case something like this happened, and they were well aware of the fact that it could. However their latest two press releases show they didn’t prepare and show that to Gumball 3000 it’s more important to cover their own ass then to tell the truth. Today Gumball 3000 also spoiled it for other rally events that run with the best intentions. We like to stress that we still support the other events on this site and their organisers, it shows that a good organization that takes responsibility and does all it can to ensure safety of participants and bystanders is absolutely crucial to organize a succesful event.
Our Gumball 3000 coverage ends here

It sucks that someone was killed i agree but its typical overhyped panic as per usual. If a driver is killed in F1 they wanna ban it, if a crowd member is killed at the WRC rally they wanna ban it, its the only response which seems to be accepted.

I guess when you look at the figures, 9 years, 3000 miles, god knows how many drivers and some very, very quick cars the odds would`ve said a lot more than 1 person would die. The sadest thing is it was a local, prob. just going about their business completely oblivious to what was happening, I`m sure the Gumballers will look after the family financially but no amount of money will ever replace a lost loved one. I hope this isn`t the end of the Gumball but that it just causes a major rethink and takes it back to its grass roots. :(
This does really sadden me. RIP.
The thing is, whether they ran or not at the end of the day, the publicity of this will really damage the Gumball from now on.
If they didn't run and held their hands up then fair play but they still deserve everything they get (even with a load of cash in your pocket and a serious exotic under your arse, you still need to know your own limits). If they did run, then personally I hope they get a long spell in a prison cell, at least.

there is speeding, and then there is dangerous driving due to high speeds - both are very different and I'm sure everyone here would agree surely?
Also.... there is no evidence to point that this crash was caused soley by either of those things. You can have an accident going at 20 in a 30mph zone or 65mph on a motorway.
It is a shame IMO ( note it's my opinion ) that the Gumball will suffer a lot of negative feedback as a result of this, however I believe their decision to finish early is the correct one. It is a real shame that an accident happened and that lives were lost / ruined - but stats wise, I'm surprised this is the first time ( that we know about anyway ). This cover up chat is however completely dispicable of Gumball 3000.

As time goes by more facts will emerge and the whole thing will become clearer. It now appears the Golf turned out of a junction into the path of the Porsche. Maybe the driver didn`t see him, maybe the Porsche was going a lot quicker than he thought, who knows ? A side impact doesn`t have to be very hard to kill, my uncle was hit side on by a Transit that the police say was doing 25-30 mph at point of impact and he was killed outright. The fact that this man died of a heart attack on route and that both men were able to walk from the Porsche must say something about the closing speed of the accident.
As for the other comments in this thread about Gumballers ? If I had the cash I`d be there ! Would I drive like a saint ? Not in a million years and I don`t think that would differ from anyone else on this forum.

it's a sad fact of life, accidents will happen at any time. It's sad that in this particular case that it's associated with an event which is known to be a little more boisterous than most.
I don't think that the issue is that the accident occured, but that they fled the scene, which is lower than low.
It's unfortunate that these two idiots have now tarnished the reputation of Gumball. Look at ALL of last year, year before, year before that, to us Gumballers were "hero's" and because of this, they're now scum? No. The scum are two captured Brits who will serve their time, we need to make sure we don't tarnish the rest of them, however, human nature dictates that it will happen regardless.
Food for thought. People die almost every day on the M25, do we close that as well?

If someone suddenly decided to organise a 'rally' with everyone driving the wrong way round the M25 then the comparism would be valid. This is a specific event that is organised for people who have no idea about the roads they are travelling on nor any respect for the law or the normal people who are using their own roads.
Yes, I'm sure that kind of event on the M25 would be banned, as would most of these drivers if they were caught doing the same speeds on the M25 as they do in rather less developed countries in Europe. Funny how places like France and Germany have given them loads of trouble this year, but why do they care - get to Eastern Europe and put your foot down!

Okay firstly my sympathy goes to the families of the deceased people. No one sets out to cause an accident even less to kill or maim anyone. As most of you know I work for a Recovery firm on contract to the Police and if you think that only rich people think they can get away with leaving the scene of as accident then you are wrong.I see it week in week out,and I've been there seen it and heard nearly every excuse in the book.Last week I picked up a motorbike which was doing in excess of 70 mph in a 30mph zone before driving on the wrong side of the road hitting an oncoming car and eventually losing his 21 year old life to a brick wall. This weekend we will be crushing 5 cars that had accidents and the drivers decamped the scene.Last month we collected 125 cars that were either not insured or being driven by unlicensed drivers,of those over half will be crushed and a fair percentage of the drivers will be caught again for the same offence. You probably think I have gone off topic but my point is it happens every single day of the week in every neighbourhood in our own country and yet it seems to get brushed under the carpet and rarely spoken about :(

Statement from Macedonian press (before the death of Vladimir's wife)
The men are Nicholas Morley, 30, and Matthew McConvile, 32. They were driving a Porsche 911 in the Gumball 3000 rally — a 4,825-kilometer (3,000-mile) race across Europe.
They were arrested on charges of endangering traffic and abandoning an accident victim, police spokesman Ivo Kotevski said. The offenses could lead to a one-year prison sentence if convicted.
More serious charges will be pressed later.
Kotevski said the crash occurred near Struga on Wednesday, while the Britons were driving to neighboring Albania.
Vladimir Cepuljoski, 67, died of injuries while being transported to a hospital in Skopje. His wife, Margarita, remains in critical condition.
“Two British citizens left the scene of an accident. Shortly afterward, border authorities found them in another car trying to cross into Albania at the Qafasan border crossing,” Kotevski said.

I really dont get why the gumball itself is being branded as scumball & that all the participants are being slated so badly...Ive done the gumball in the past & it is VERY clearly stated more than once that drivers are to observe the laws of the land & abide by the given speed limits imposed. If every single participant of the gumball is a out & out speed freaking wanker then how do the likes of a citroen 2cv or an ice cream truck with a top speed of 50mph fare up when they arive at check points before alot of the exotics???
Yes there are loads of flash cars we'd all love to own & im sure some people are happy the 'rich tossers' have ended up with egg on their face but is it really fair to paint everyone with the same brush? Its the same in principal as if we had a member on here who was abusive to everyone....ok he's absolutely a prick but is the whole forum at fault? No.....
The point of the Gumball is to get from one check point to another...thats it...it makes no difference at all if your first or tenth as long as you get there.
I agree, the two guys in the car should be taken to a foreign jail and gang raped by 'uncle Carol & aunty Dave' for all eternity for leaving the scene of the accident, but to bring down a global event like the gumball because of it? hell no! I'll happily be on the start line next year

New press release
Maximillion Cooper and the organisers of the Gumball 3000 Rally would like to reiterate their sadness regarding the tragic accident that occurred on Wednesday 2nd May in Macedonia involving a participating car and a local vehicle.
The organisers wish to confirm that the facts of the incident were not withheld from the participants; as soon as the Macedonian Authorities confirmed clear details of events and confirmation of the fatality that occurred several hours after the accident on Thursday 3rd May the organisers cancelled the event without hesitation and issued an official statement at the earliest possible time.
The organisers are disappointed at rally participants Mr. A. Roy and Mr. M. Ross’s blatant self promotion at a time when all efforts are being made by Gumball 3000 to manage this difficult situation.
The press release issued today by Mr. Roy and Mr. Ross promoting themselves as 'winners' of the event is misleading and Gumball 3000 wishes to make it clear that there is no recognition for finishing first and no ‘winner’ is recorded.
Maximillion Cooper and his team are further saddened at their request for the organiser’s resignation and their complaints about the 'professionalism' of other participants.
“As the organiser and founder of the event I feel the timing of this press release to be in particular bad taste. The selection process of participants is designed to be fair and without discrimination. In the events 9-year history over 6 million road miles have been driven by 2000 participating cars without any previous accidents of this nature; proof alone that I and the rest of the organisers do everything within our power to ensure safety during the Rally. In the future we will work even more closely with the authorities in each country the event travels through to ensure the safety and success of the event moving forward.”
Gumball organisers are in close communication with the Macedonian authorities and are doing all they can to assist the family in way at this time.
People think Gumball cancelled because of Alex Roy!!! WTFF!

I really don't like it when they keep mentioning that
"In the events 9-year history over 6 million road miles have been driven by 2000 participating cars without any previous accidents of this nature; proof alone that I and the rest of the organisers do everything within our power to ensure safety during the Rally"
are they brain damaged or what even idiots would now accidents like this was bound to happen sooner or later

Looks like it's the end of a successful relationship between Team Polizei and Gumball. Pity really, as both had achieved so much working together.
People think Gumball cancelled because of Alex Roy!!!
Team Polizei most definitely contributed to the eventual cancellation of the rally, but with good reasons.
