SMG1 or SMG2 why does everyone tell me to get 2?

I am looking at an SMG M3, however everyone I talk too tells me to steer clear of the SMGI version...!!

Why? is it that bad ~ how bad is it? is there not an aftermarket fix?

werid never knew the the M3 had 2 version , there are 2 versions but one(SMG I) was on the E36 M3 and teh SMGII is on the E46 .

SMG I was on the E36 M3 and the SMG II was on the E46 M3 and then SMG III is on the E60 M5 and the E63 M6.

Oh... I see, I was under the impression that there were too versions of SMG on the E46 M3.... that clears things up for me now.

I think that there was a early 1 on the E46 M3, but the sofware etc changed! Could be wrong tho.

Steve, how about a Estoril Blue one.

make sure the car has all of the smg software updates, as there have been quite a few! dealer history should be able to give you a printout.

I believe davich is right, the E46 M3 SMG software was revised around 2002 :D

I thought there was an SMG1 on the E46 but was completely sure, thats probably why my friends get SMG2.... 02 onwards right...!!

Ehh...?

Even though there was a software update on the SMG II of the E46 M3 it is still a SMG II, just with different revisions of the software.

Just wanted to be sure everyone is agreeing. I hate being wrong. :D

E46 m3s only come with SMG2 (albeit many software upgrades).

In fact the term SMG1 does not even exist in BMW's books. The original SMG found on E36 M3 Evos are termed just SMG.
