lowered? If so. You're most likely rubbing the tyre against the arch. Easy fix, get the arches rolled. If it's NOT lowered, then you'll have to be more specific on conditions of noise generation so we can throw some ideas out
Erm is lowered yes but was making this noise before, the noise comes & goes as you are turning the car weird.
Its the diff thats gone...had it on both my M3's....hope you got warranty;)
On turning left and right, at near full lock at slow speed you get a rubbing sound from the rear. Dealer may try an oil change first, if this doesnt cure then its a new diff.
Get the dealer to check it, as over time you'll hear a scraping noise from the diff while driving and then eventually lose all drive...although this could take months.
Another check is to lift the rear end and rotate the wheels, there shouldnt be any slack before the diff starts to turn with the wheel....any slack and the diffs gone. Give BMW emergency a call and this is how they'll check it.

Mits, can you remember what the mileages were on your cars when the diff failure occurred - have seen a fair bit of talk of this on BM3W, could be a big factor in me renewing my warranty.
Oh great jus wot i needed thanks mit any idea what kind of money im looking at?
I'm not sure if its mileage dependant as it could also be if they havnt used the right diff oil at the running in service.
On my first M3 it was around 16k and the second was around 50k.
When done under warranty I think the cost was around 2k, so my dealer said....but I think its between £1000 and £1500.
Mits is the just for the diff or inc labour?
Will it cause any damage to any other parts of the car like gear box if i drive it?
Does anyone no if SMG diff will fit manual thanks

the SMG and Maunal have the same gearbox , so they have the same diff

Is it a grinding noise? If so it's the LSD that's gone. BMW sells a replacement LSD as a sealed unit (comes with housing). It will be a good part of £2k (inc VAT) just for the diff + labour. Good luck!
SMG and manual diffs are the same AFAIK. You might want to source one from ebay or Fab Direct if you haven't got warranty. Secondhand ones go for around £500 each, but you don't know how much longer they will last unlike an open diff which is likely to be bomb proof.
Rups the longer you leave it, you will start getting a metalic, metal grinding sound from the diff, just rolling along at any speed ...which I dont think is good:rolleyes:
It was nearly 6 months before the dealer eventually changed mine after two oil changes, them telling me it was ok and me thinking ive got warranty so i'll just keep driving it.:o
Make them aware of the problem and see what they say.
yeah im taking it to my local garage first then if they cant sort it then of to the stealers, have been checking with 247 spares and the diff are going for around £500 this one was low mileage one of a 55 plate.
