Guys, if you add a CAI replica to an M3 (like a GruppeM replica), although the sound will be enhanced, will you actually lose power? I remember someone mentioning this once before:confused:

Opinion varies, but it won't be more than a few horses really - what's important (and what most sellers fail to mention) is that your actual gain is a LOT of sound and ZERO bhp.

this varies also depending on the car's condition. Also if you add a nice free flow backbox and a centre/front head combination, then you'll definitely gain some power rather than losing some. people add a CAI but not changed the exhaust, the engine breathe better but can't fart as well...that probably explains why. imagine if you eat a lot but am unable to crap out...how is your stomach gonna feel?

Difficult one to answer. From my own experience, it's more acoustic gains. However, the engine perform optimally with the optimum air/fuel ratio mix. This is set at the factory using the stock airbox. Altering the air/fuel mixture without remapping the engine to suit will inevitably shift the efficiency curve away from optimum setting. It's the balance between acoustics, asthetics and optimum engine performance, whichever one that is more important to you, you choose your compromise.
